~ Illinois Engraved Catlanite ~ Stone Pipe ~
Length: 3 1/4"
Grade: 10
Description: Finely carved Historic Native American Catlinite Gun Barrel Pipe with an old Illinois collectores sticker that probably was applied in the early 1900's. The Pipe would date between 1775 to 1835. It would have been joined to a long, carved wooden pipe stem, often adorned with feathers or other decorations. A great amount of work went into selecting the Pipestone, carving, drilling and polishing such a highly personal object, likely held and smoked for many years. A fine example of from the Historic period.
Provenance: Found on private property with permission, on the French / Indian Village of Kaskaskia, Randolph Co. Illinois. Ex: The late Frank Morast Sr. Collection.
