~ Alabama ~ Double Cupped Discoidal ~ Chunkey Game Stone ~
Length: 2 7/8"
Grade: 8
Description: This rare, wonderful relic was used during the Mississippian Era (900 to 1500 A.D.) in a game called Chunkey, played by rolling a smooth stone disk (the “chunkey stone”) across the ground while players threw long spears or poles, trying to land them as close as possible to where the stone would stop.
It wasn’t just a game—it often involved heavy betting, prestige, and large gatherings, sometimes becoming a major social and ceremonial event.
This is a smaller one, with many of them larger, from 5 -7 inches in diameter. Made of dense brown quartzite and this form is called a Tennessee style game stone. Highly collectable and rarely offered for sale.
Provenance: Found on private property with permission in Monroe Co. Alabama (see last picture). Comes with a Jerry Dickey Certificate of Authenticity
