Length: 5 1/2"
Grade: 9
Description: Finely crafted from Suwannee River Basin chert, this Canoe making tool, called a gouge exhibits the classic Clear Fork form with a pronounced hafting fork at the base. The intentional protrusion left along one side of the artifact likely served as a stabilizing shoulder within the haft, helping to prevent rotation and improve tool control during use. The working edge displays the robust, beveled profile characteristic of woodworking gouges used for hollowing and shaping wooden objects. The preservation of this specialized hafting feature provides insight into the maker's understanding of tool performance and secure haft attachment.
Provenance: Found in Suwannee Co. Florida, by Jacky Fuller.
