~ Ultra Rare Mississipppian Mace ~ Scepter
~ Ultra Rare Mississipppian Mace ~ Scepter
Length: 8 3/4"
Grade: 7
Description: Very rare artifact pictured here. These Scepters have only been found on larger early mound builder Mississippian time period villages and even then they are very rarely recovered. This would have belong to a high ranking individual such as a chief. It was bascially a glorified Axe Head, but one that was designed for 'Show' more than have a practical function. It would have been halfed in a wooden handle expertly carved, painted and custom fit. It would have been festooned with feathers dangeling down. It was a symbol of rank and status and was created to show that this person who owned it was special and set apart from all others. This example I am offering here is broken and would been another 4 to 6 inches longer. It appears to have been reworked at the break as there is grinding and smoothing of the break area present. It is heavily polished with great ancient surface patina.
Provenance: Found on private property with permission, many years from an old collection. From north Georgia.
