Description: A rare piece to come from such a famous site as Tick Island. Probably the best single site in Florida, and maybe the whole southeastern USA. The site is a series of tall shell middens just off the St. Johns River. The shell middens did a great job of preserving perishables such as bone artifacts. The site was commercially mined for the shell to be used as septic line fill or spread for drive ways etc. At the dredge barge they washed the shell and numerous arttifact became uncovered and collected. You can still see some of the flex and bits of crushed shell hiding in the little pocket in the second picture.
