Macon Co. Alabama ~ Historic Creek Indian ~ Chattahoochee Brushed Bowl

Height: 5 1/2" x 7 3/4" wide

Grade: 8

Description: Wondeful example of a Historic (1700-1780 A.D.) Era Creek Indian, Chattahoochee Brushed Bowl. Found with some pressure cracks, basically it was in 3 pieces and then glued and restored back together. This has all the classic hallmarks of this type of vessel; the folded rim with 'Ticking" (hash or tally marks) all around the rim, the shape is also typical. Everywhere below the shoulders was brushed with reeds or straw before the bowl was fired. These were used as utilitarian vessels for storage, or for cooking. Rare to find any complete pottery in the deep south.

Provenance: Found many years ago on private property with permission in Macon Co. Alabama on the "Autassi Indian Village" site along the Tallapoosa River. Ex: Bill Spradley collection.
