Description: The Tapir went extinct in North America by the end of the last Ice Age some 10,000 years ago a large, herbivorous mammal, similar in shape to a pig, with a short, prehensile nose trunk. Tapirs still to this day inhabit jungle and forest regions of South and Central America, and Southeast Asia. This is the toe or phalanx bone of one of these animals. Found years ago in the Santa Fe River.
