Why Collect?

There were literally millions upon millions of projectile points and tools made over 1,000’s and 1,000’s of years scattered across the land in, streams, lakes and oceans throughout the south. Millions have been found and millions remain. More than enough for science to study and display with plenty left over for those of us who want to collect, preserve, study and share with others. Those of us who collect enjoy stimulating our minds to wonder and ask such questions as; When was this artifact made? Why? For what purpose? What did its creator look like? Where did he collect this stone? What did his world look like? How long did he stay here? Did this stone point bring down its prey? How did he lose it? To ponder these thoughts with fascination and the sheer wonder of it all.

It is in our DNA to explore and it is good for our souls to escape this often mundane, chaotic world in which we live. Some of us may not be able get out and search or we’ll admit we can’t as often as we like. So it is our hope that this site and the ancient offering it contains will take you in your mind, if only for the moments that you can view these pieces of history in your hand or on the screen to a simpler time when the world was pristine, clean and pure.  When people lived by their wits and not by how much money they had in the bank.

·        PALEO: 14,000 to 10,000 B.P. (before present).

·        PROTOARCHAIC: 10,000 to 9,000 B.P.

·        EARLY ARCHAIC: 9,000 to 7,500 B.P.

·        MIDDLE ARCHAIC: 7,500 to 5,000 B.P.

·        LATE ARCHAIC: 5,000 to 3,500 B.P.

·        GULF FORMATIONAL: 3,500 to 2,500 B.P.

·        WOODLAND: 2,500 to 1,000 B.P.

·        MISSISSIPPIAN: 1,000 B.P. to 1513 A.D.

·        PROTOHISTORIC: 1513 A.D. to 1702 A.D.

·        HISTORIC: A.D. 1702 to 1842 (Indian removal to western reservations)

Collecting Ancient Native American Artifacts from the Deep Southeast.

This fascinating area of study is particularly intriguing in the Deep Southeastern part of North America. Here there is such a diverse range of cultural periods that are strongly represented.

North America is unique in that Stone Age technology persisted from the very beginning of settlement on the continent all the way up until the trading of European firearms in the 1700’s. There was no evolution from the Stone Age. No Bronze Age or Iron Age. So diversity and stylistic changes in stone projectile points and tool assemblages is unmatched anywhere else in the world. Another special feature of studying and collecting artifacts from the deep southeast is the vast array of chipped lithics (stones) used. Ranging from Quartz, Quartzite, Rhyolite, Flint, Chert, Chalcedony, Jasper, Agate, and Coral.

All of these occurring in a seemingly endless variety of colors with many example being made from translucent Gem Grade stones. Unfortunately, much of the material culture of the native peoples has long since decayed, but there are exceptions with many Bone and Shell Artifacts surviving when found in the favorable environments for preservation. Occasionally even wood objects are discovered.
