Manatee Co. Florida ~ Calusa Shell Celt
Length: 3"
Grade: 9
Description: Made from the thick outer lip of the Queen Conch (Strombus Gigus) this is another fine Celt. Stone was so rare in the area that Shells were used instead. This was found in the area that was inhabited by the mighty Calusa Tribe and can certainly be attributed to them. This tribe never grew crops and mainly hunted and fished. This Celt would have been used to chop wood, vegetation or anything else needed. This one still has the luster of the inside of the shell, so it had to have been preserved away from exposure to the sun like in a shell mound.
Provenance: Found on private property with owner's permission from Manatee Co. Florida
